Philosophy
The unease of being between what was and what will be.
Surface
A liminal space is a threshold, a place or time of transition between one state and another. The word comes from the Latin limen, meaning threshold. Airports at 3am, empty shopping malls, the moment between sleeping and waking. Places that feel like they exist outside of normal time.
Middle
Anthropologist Arnold van Gennep identified liminality in ritual: every meaningful transition, birth, initiation, death, involves a middle phase of ambiguity where the old identity has dissolved but the new one has not yet formed. This in-between state is psychologically destabilizing and, paradoxically, generative.
Deep
Liminal spaces are uncomfortable because humans are meaning-making creatures who need to know where they stand. But the most transformative periods of life are almost always liminal, the gap between jobs, between relationships, between versions of yourself. The discomfort is not a malfunction. It is the cost of becoming.
