Psychology
Unfinished tasks haunt you. Finished ones disappear.
Surface
Bluma Zeigarnik discovered in 1927 that people remember interrupted or incomplete tasks far better than completed ones. Waiters could recall complex orders in detail, until the bill was paid. Then the memory vanished almost immediately.
Middle
The brain tags incomplete tasks as active and keeps them in working memory, consuming cognitive resources until resolution. This is why cliffhangers are addictive, to-do lists create anxiety, and the best way to start a creative project is to stop mid-sentence.
Deep
The Zeigarnik Effect is the engine behind every serialized story ever told. It is also why open loops in your personal life drain energy even when you're not consciously thinking about them. Closure is not just emotional, it is neurological. The brain needs to file things away to function clearly.
