Psychology
Your mind is not just looking for truth. It is looking for the version of reality it already believes.
Surface
Confirmation bias is the tendency to seek, interpret, and remember information in ways that support your existing beliefs. When you start with a conclusion, evidence often gets filtered: ambiguous signals are read as agreement, and contradictory signals are explained away or simply forgotten.
Middle
The subtle danger is that the belief feels justified after the fact. You do not just have a preference; you actively collect reasons. Over time, this creates a feedback loop: your attention highlights confirming data, your interpretation favors consistency, and your memory stores the most flattering examples.
Deep
Freedom from confirmation bias does not require becoming skeptical of everything. It requires changing the update rule: actively generate alternative hypotheses, look for what would disconfirm your view, and treat uncertainty as a first class input. The goal is not to win arguments; it is to reduce the gap between your model and the world.
