Psychology
Your brain is a pattern machine, even when there's no pattern.
Surface
Apophenia is the tendency to perceive meaningful connections between unrelated things. You see a face in a cloud, find significance in a coincidence, or hear your name spoken in background noise. Your brain is not malfunctioning, it is doing exactly what it evolved to do.
Middle
Pattern recognition was a survival advantage. The ancestor who saw a predator in every shadow survived longer than the one who didn't. False positives were cheap; false negatives were fatal. So evolution built a pattern-detection system that errs heavily on the side of finding patterns.
Deep
Apophenia is the root of superstition, conspiracy theories, and religious experience. But it is also the root of scientific intuition, artistic connection, and metaphor. The same mechanism that sees faces in toast also connects disparate ideas into insight. The difference between genius and delusion is often just evidence.
