Emergence

Surface

Emergence is the phenomenon where complex systems and patterns arise from relatively simple interactions. No single neuron understands language. No single ant knows the architecture of the colony. Yet brains produce consciousness and ant colonies produce engineering. The whole becomes something the parts cannot explain.

Middle

Emergence appears everywhere: market prices from individual transactions, traffic jams from individual driving decisions, life from chemistry, consciousness from neurons. In each case, a new level of reality appears that cannot be predicted from or reduced to the level below it.

Deep

Emergence challenges reductionism, the idea that understanding parts gives you understanding of wholes. Some of the most important things in the universe only exist at the level of the system. You cannot find love in neurons or justice in atoms. These are emergent phenomena, and they are no less real for being irreducible.
